The day Billy Davidson first walked through the doors of the Center City Soul Club in Aberdeen, Scotland, way back in 1977, he never knew what a life defining moment that would be.
"On reflection, I have always loved soul music. I realised this when my mother told me, as a small child in the 1960's, I always begged her and my Dad, to buy the latest Motown releases, I'd heard on the radio. However, when I first went to Center City, I thought, " Wow, this really is MY world
I'm home".
From that day on, he has lived for the "music", first through Northern Soul, progressing to Jazz Funk and Disco, moving into Jazz and Modern Soul and finally on to embracing the Soulful House sounds of today.
In the UK in the late 70's and 80's, Billy had to travel extensively to attend the venues that played the best music. In the early days this involved hitch hiking 700 miles a weekend, just to hear the latest tracks.
Being a "vinyl junkie", a close friend and DJ, Phil Jordan, asked him to DJ for the first time at the Isle of Skye, in Perth. It was 1979 and yet another life defining moment began, for this self-confessed soul freak. As he learned his trade, he began to play at events all over Scotland eventually holding weekly residency in Glasgow and even guesting at " Rafters" in Manchester.
A significant step came in 1986, when Alex Lowes, a friend and DJ, asked if he would like to play at a weekend long event, in a holiday camp situated in Berwick upon Tweed. Four hundred people braved that wet weekend, which was to become the nucleus for the Southport Weekender phenomenon. Attending these events introduced Billy to House Music(coupled with Tony Humphries becoming the resident at the Ministry of Sound, where he and his devoted wife Sue, spent their life savings going to London to hear him play)
his future was finally molded.
Having played at all Southport Weekender events to date (35 as we write), Billy began playing all over the UK, spreading the gospel of the soulful sound. He also opened a club in Aberdeen, called "Joy", with the Center City Soul Club organizer JS, and in the mid 90's, the Saturday night residency hosted guests such as Kerri Chandler and Phil Asher.
The next obvious step was into production, where Billy joined good friends Athol and Austyn, to formed the "Sons of David", a team who released a number of singles on small UK label's (and eventually a remix of "People of the World").
By chance, two of Billy's friends (Shauna and Kizer), went to New York and hooked up with some people from New Jersey. At a party, they played a tape of Billy's. At this party was Carl Dupree. He heard this mix and got in touch with him
. another defining moment.
Carl invited Billy and his DJ partner Austyn Davidson, to play at his residency at the Loop Lounge (NJ) and at other gig's in NYC. On their second visit, Carl wanted to name the night and on discussing this with Billy, the name " Phuture Sole" was born. At that time, Billy also met Mark Mendoza (a long standing idol of Billy's) and his group friendship was born.
Billy has continued to support Carl and Mark, providing a link to the UK and networking on behalf on "Phuture Sole". " I feel privileged to be a part of something my roots tell me is, "why I love this music so much" and I'm proud to be part of the team, where my heartfelt thanks go out to, not only to the family, but to the people who support me (my wife and friends) and to those who believe".
